Can you buy property in Madeira with cryptocurrency?

Updated: 11 September 2026

Yes. And this is currently one of the most interesting and frequently asked questions. I personally handle transactions like these — this is not theory, but practical experience.

Here are a few examples from my own work.

Some of my clients held all of their capital in cryptocurrency. They needed a plot of land to build a house. I found the plot, arranged a legal conversion into euros through a licensed partner at a very competitive rate, and completed the transaction before the notary in full compliance with Portuguese law.

In another case, clients were buying a villa for €700,000 — part of the amount came from cryptocurrency and the rest through a mortgage. I coordinated the mortgage broker, the legal conversion of crypto into euros and 60% bank financing. The transaction was ultimately completed before the notary, and the client was satisfied with the result.

The key difference between this and the usual “theoretically possible” claims you often see is the practical execution of the transaction. The conversion is carried out legally through a licensed partner I work with, in full compliance with Portuguese legislation, rather than by bypassing the banking system or Portuguese law.

By the time the property transaction takes place, the cryptocurrency has already been converted into euros in a bank account, and from that point onwards the process is no different from a standard property purchase.
